Journey
Born in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal, Njabulo Mthunzi Ndimande, better known by his stage name Mthunzi, is a multi-platinum South African singer-songwriter and producer. Encouraged by his mother from age three, Mthunzi’s musical roots were formed in church and community halls. His professional journey began in 2008 when he started recording and sharing music on SoundCloud. After years of independent effort, his career reached a turning point in 2019 when he relocated to Johannesburg at the invitation of renowned producer Sun-El Musician. Joining the El World Music imprint, he released his debut single "Ngibambe La," which earned millions of streams and catapulted him into the spotlight.
In January 2020, Mthunzi released his debut studio album, Selimathunzi, a 16-track Zulu-sung project blending Afro-pop, R&B, and traditional Maskandi influences. The album received critical acclaim, earning him a nomination for Best Afro Pop Album at the 26th South African Music Awards (SAMA).
Mthunzi’s most significant commercial success came with his pivot toward Amapiano. His 2023 collaborative project with Kabza De Small, titled Isimo, became a cultural phenomenon. The hit single "Imithandazo" swept the 2024 Metro FM Music Awards, winning Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, and Best Amapiano. The project also won SAMPRA Album of the Year and Best Amapiano Album at the 30th SAMAs.
Today, Mthunzi is recognized as a versatile powerhouse, seamlessly transitioning between soulful Afrosoul and high-energy Amapiano while maintaining his signature Zulu vocal style. He has collaborated with the industry's elite, including Ami Faku, Young Stunna, and Zakes Bantwini.
