Kaskade, whose birth name is Ryan Gary Raddon, is an American DJ, producer, songwriter, and remixer born in Chicago, Illinois. His career has played a significant role in the development of U.S. electronic dance music. His musical roots were formed in Chicago’s house culture during the 1980s, when he followed local DJs, collected vinyl, and eventually began performing himself. Raddon moved to Utah in the early 1990s, where he studied at the University of Utah while building his career as a DJ. He established a weekly house night, operated Mechanized Records, and began producing music independently. In 2000, he relocated to San Francisco and joined OM Records as an A&R assistant. While working at the label, he developed the Kaskade alias and began submitting his own productions. His first Kaskade single, “What I Say,” was released in 2001. His debut album, "It’s You, It’s Me," arrived in 2003, establishing the melodic house-oriented approach that became central to his early catalog. He followed it with "In the Moment" (2004), which produced “Steppin’ Out,” a major dance hit that reached the Top 5 on Billboard’s commercial dance radio chart. Subsequent albums including "Love Mysterious," "Strobelite Seduction," "The Grand," and "Dynasty" steadily expanded his audience. Dynasty became his first album to enter the Billboard 200. Kaskade reached another career milestone with "Fire & Ice" in 2011. The double album, which featured collaborations with artists including Skylar Grey, Skrillex, and Neon Trees, reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200 and earned him his first Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronica Album. As electronic music moved increasingly into arenas and major festivals, Kaskade became one of its leading American performers. His career has included major festival appearances, extensive touring, and landmark performances, such as a prominent Coachella main stage set in 2015. His work has earned multiple Grammy nominations and collaborations with artists such as Tiësto, Skrillex, ZHU, Gorgon City, and deadmau5. His long-running partnership with deadmau5 eventually developed into Kx5, formally launched in 2022. The duo released their self-titled album in 2023, led by the single “Escape,” and received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Kaskade has also taken electronic music into new forms of large-scale entertainment. In 2024, he became the first in-game DJ at the Super Bowl, followed later that year by another first as the starting-grid DJ at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. These appearances reflected the expansion of his career beyond traditional clubs and festivals into major sporting and cultural events. Across more than three decades, Kaskade has maintained a career built on DJ culture, original production, songwriting, touring, and continual reinvention. His journey from Chicago’s house clubs and vinyl shops to international festivals, arena performances, Grammy recognition, and Kx5 places him among the most enduring American figures in electronic dance music.
