Journey
Armin Jozef Jacobus Daniël van Buuren, born in Leiden, South Holland, Netherlands, is a Dutch DJ, record producer, remixer, composer, and radio host. Active since 1996, he has established an international career in electronic dance music through studio recordings, remixes, live performances, radio broadcasting, and record label management. His catalogue spans trance, progressive trance, progressive house, dance-pop, and electronic music, and has been released through labels including Armada Music, Armind, Kontor Records, Sony Music, and Universal Music.
Van Buuren began producing electronic music during his teenage years after developing an interest in synthesizers and computer-based production. While studying law at Leiden University, he balanced his academic work with DJ performances and studio production. His early singles, including "Blue Fear" (1997) and "Communication" (1999), established his profile within the international trance community and led to regular appearances at clubs and festivals throughout Europe.
In 2001, he introduced 'A State of Trance (ASOT),' a weekly radio programme dedicated to electronic dance music. The broadcast has expanded into a globally distributed radio show, a compilation album series, and an international festival brand, becoming one of the longest-running platforms dedicated to trance music. In 2003, he co-founded 'Armada Music' with Maykel Piron and David Lewis. The company has grown into one of the world's largest independent electronic music labels, representing a broad catalogue of electronic music releases and artists.
His studio discography includes "76" (2003), "Shivers" (2005), "Imagine" (2008), "Mirage" (2010), "Intense" (2013), "Embrace" (2015), "Balance" (2019), "Feel Again" (2023), "Breathe In" (2024), and "Breathe Out" (2025). His catalogue also includes recordings such as "Communication," "Burned With Desire," "Shivers," "In and Out of Love," "This Is What It Feels Like," "Blah Blah Blah," and "Great Spirit." Throughout his career, he has collaborated with Trevor Guthrie, Sharon den Adel, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, David Guetta, Bon Jovi, Hardwell, Gryffin, and Pendulum.
Van Buuren has received extensive industry recognition, including five DJ Mag Top 100 DJs No. 1 rankings, Grammy Award nominations, Edison Awards, International Dance Music Awards, and Buma Awards. Alongside his recording work, he continues to perform at major international festivals including Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, Creamfields, and Untold Festival. His contributions as a recording artist, broadcaster, producer, and label executive have maintained his position among the most influential figures in contemporary electronic dance music.
