Journey
Goldmax, born Zipho Mthembu, is a South African DJ, producer, and performer from KwaMashu, Durban, closely associated with the rise of gqom. He developed his musical foundation through township environments, community events, and early DJ experiences at local venues, where he built an understanding of rhythm and audience engagement.
He rose to prominence as one half of Distruction Boyz alongside Thobani “Que” Mgobhozi. Formed around 2015, the duo helped bring gqom from Durban’s underground scene to mainstream and international audiences. Their debut album "Gqom Is The Future" achieved gold certification and featured notable tracks such as “Omunye,” “Uzophuza amanzi,” and “Wololo,” which contributed to the genre’s wider recognition.
Goldmax later pursued solo work, releasing projects including “Music Saved Me” and “Mkhuleko Womama” under Sound African Recordings. His collaborations span artists such as Dlala Thukzin, Young Stunna, Zanda Zakuza, and Nkosazana Daughter, reflecting his presence across South African music circles.
In 2025, he received major recognition at the SAMA Awards, winning Album of the Year, Best Gqom Album, and Male Artist of the Year, reinforcing his influence within the industry.
