Ustad Zakir Hussain Allarakha Qureshi, widely known as Ustad Zakir Hussain, was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The son of the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Alla Rakha, he inherited one of the most distinguished musical lineages in Hindustani classical music. He began learning tabla in early childhood under his father’s strict guidance and quickly displayed exceptional rhythmic talent, eventually emerging as one of the finest percussionists of his generation. A virtuoso tabla player, composer, arranger, percussionist, music producer, and actor, Zakir Hussain built a career that connected Hindustani classical music with jazz, world music, and contemporary global traditions. For many years, he was based in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he collaborated extensively with musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds and helped introduce Indian rhythmic traditions to international audiences. From 1980 through 2024, he recorded extensively for Saregama India Ltd and Saregama. His discography includes “Tabla Solo,” “Tabla Beats,” “Golden Milestones,” and “Golden Milestones – Ustad Zakir Hussain,” recordings that showcase both solo virtuosity and ensemble artistry. His collaborations with artists such as Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, John McLaughlin, Mickey Hart, and other leading figures in jazz and world music significantly expanded the global profile of the tabla. Through projects in jazz fusion and world music, he demonstrated how Indian rhythmic systems could engage meaningfully with international musical forms while retaining their classical integrity. Beyond the concert stage, Zakir Hussain contributed to film music, acting, and music production, further broadening his artistic reach. His achievements were recognized with major honors including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, multiple Grammy Awards, and numerous international distinctions for music and cultural exchange. He died on 15 December 2024, bringing to a close a remarkable career spanning more than four decades. His recordings, compositions, collaborations, and teaching legacy continue to inspire musicians worldwide and remain an enduring part of the Hindustani classical and world music canon.
