Ustad Amir Khan became one of the most influential khayal vocalists of the twentieth century through a deeply contemplative singing style that reshaped modern Hindustani classical music. His recordings continue to be studied by musicians worldwide, and his artistic vision remains central to the development of the Indore gharana. He was born in Akola, then part of British India, into a family devoted to classical music. His father, Shahmir Khan, a respected sarangi player and vocalist, became his first and most important teacher. From early childhood, Amir Khan received rigorous training in raga, voice culture, and rhythm, developing the discipline that later defined his artistry. By the 1930s he had begun performing publicly and gradually earned recognition for a vocal approach distinguished by slow raga development, precise intonation, and profound emotional depth. Drawing inspiration from the Kirana, Bhendi Bazaar, and Agra traditions, he created a highly individual style that came to be identified with the Indore gharana. His celebrated recordings include “Raga Marwa,” “Raga Darbari,” “Raga Todi,” “Raga Multani,” and “Raga Yaman.” He also composed bandishes under the pen name “Sur Rang.” In addition to concert performances, he contributed playback singing to films such as “Baiju Bawra,” “Shabaab,” and “Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje,” introducing classical vocalism to wider audiences while maintaining a strong classical identity. Amir Khan’s achievements were recognized with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1967 and the Padma Bhushan from the Government of India in 1971. He died in Kolkata on 13 February 1974, leaving behind a legacy that continues through his recordings, compositions, disciples, and the enduring vitality of the Indore gharana in contemporary Hindustani classical music.
