Journey
Austin Khulani Baloyi, better known as Tyler ICU, is a South African DJ, record producer, and one of the leading names in the Amapiano genre. His journey in music began early: when he was about 10 years old, he got his first computer and started experimenting with beats. By the time he was 15, he was producing more seriously.
Tyler ICU was born on 3 January 1989 in South Africa, and he grew up in Tembisa, a township of Kempton Park in Gauteng. He was raised in a family that appreciated music; the influence of his surroundings and early exposure to music shaped his ambition. His parents have been supportive, though their names are not widely publicized.
He officially started making a name for himself in the music industry around 2006, working quietly, making beats in the back room of his home. Over the years, he produced songs for other artists: for example, he made “Good For That” by Cassper Nyovest, among others.
Tyler ICU’s breakthrough moment came in 2020, with the release of his EP Money Heist. That EP included the single “Bella Ciao” (with Nicole Elocin, DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small), which brought him into the mainstream spotlight. He followed this with “Banyana” (a collaboration with DJ Maphorisa) in 2021, which went double platinum in South Africa.
His biggest hit so far is “Mnike” (with Tumelo ZA, DJ Maphorisa, Nandipha808, Ceeka RSA, Tyron Dee), released in 2023. The song dominated charts in South Africa: it was certified platinum and stayed at number one on The Official South African Charts and Billboard South Africa Songs for sixteen consecutive weeks.
Tyler ICU’s style is grounded in Amapiano—a genre born in South Africa that mixes deep house, jazz, lounge, and kwaito elements. Over time, he has also shown an ability to draw from hip hop, Afrobeat, and electronic music production techniques, but Amapiano remains his primary signature sound.
Regarding awards and nominations, Tyler ICU has accumulated quite a few: In 2022, at the South African Music Awards, he was nominated in multiple categories, including TikTok Viral Song of the Year for “Banyana”, Record of the Year, and Music Video of the Year. He was nominated for Best African Act at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards thanks largely to the success of “Mnike”. Also in 2024, “Mnike” won Song of the Year at the TikTok Top Creator Awards. More recently, he won Best Artist at the Trace Awards 2025.
Some of his major achievements include not only chart successes and platinum certifications, but also global recognition: “Mnike” reached massive streaming and social media numbers (YouTube views, audio streams, TikTok virality) and gave him nominations beyond South Africa. Another achievement he holds dear is building a house for his mother, which he has described as one of his greatest personal accomplishments.
On the non-musical side, Tyler ICU has interests beyond making songs. He has expressed appreciation for technology: if he weren’t a musician, he has said, he would have pursued Information Technology. He’s described himself as a “geek” with respect to computers. He also dropped out of university before completing his final module to focus fully on music, with the intention of returning someday.
