Journey
Solomon Majafela Molokoane, known professionally as Solly Moholo, was a celebrated South African gospel singer and songwriter from Soshanguve, Pretoria, Gauteng. He was renowned for his powerful voice and unique blend of traditional gospel and township influences, often performing in the attire and dance style associated with the Zion Christian Church (ZCC).
Moholo’s music career began in the early 2000s, gaining national prominence with his 2001 album "Ba Mmitsa Tsotsi," which introduced his sound to a wide audience and helped establish him as a leading figure in South African gospel. His extensive discography includes numerous albums released through Sony Music Special Projects and Sound African Recordings. Releases such as "Wubani O zo Pepeza" and "Palamente e Kgopela Merapelo" draw on the devotional core of traditional South African gospel, while "Stop Killing The Police" demonstrates a willingness to bring the genre into direct conversation with the social realities facing South African communities.
Throughout his career, Moholo’s music resonated deeply with listeners across South Africa and neighbouring countries, combining devotional themes with vibrant performances. He also served as a mentor to artists such as Winnie Mashaba, contributing to the development of the gospel music community.
In September 2024, Moholo fell ill while on tour in Botswana, suffering a stroke and multiple organ failure. He was hospitalised and later transferred back to South Africa, where he died on 2 October 2024 at age 65. His passing prompted widespread tributes from fans and fellow artists.
In recognition of his impact on gospel music, Moholo was honoured posthumously with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 31st South African Music Awards in 2025.
