Journey
Khaya Mthethwa is an influential South African musician, composer, and ordained pastor who has significantly shaped the landscape of African gospel music. Born in November 1987, in the city of Durban, he grew up in Umlazi within a household dedicated to ministry. This spiritual upbringing laid the groundwork for his future career, which began to gain traction during his time with the iconic group Joyous Celebration. His ability to play multiple instruments, including the piano and guitar, combined with his unique vocal range, quickly established him as a premier talent.
A turning point in his life occurred in 2012 when he made history as the first Black winner of Idols South Africa. This win bridged the gap between secular pop success and his religious roots. His introductory album, For You, reached Gold status almost immediately, proving his massive appeal. His subsequent discography features powerful projects such as The Uprising (2014) and his recent 2023 offering, Art & Worship, which highlights his evolution as a worship leader.
Outside of his music, Mthethwa is a household name in broadcasting, notably hosting Gospel Classics and contributing his expertise as a judge on various talent shows. Even with his immense fame, he remains committed to his role as a spiritual leader at Oasis Church. With numerous SAMAs (South African Music Awards) and Crown Gospel Awards to his name, he continues to be a leading figure in the global Christian music community.
