Journey
Goodman Mxolisi “Jabu” Hlongwane, born on 10 June 1961 in Zola, Soweto, is one of South Africa’s most respected gospel musicians, pastors, and songwriters. The fifth of seven children, he grew up in Dlamini, Johannesburg, and later completed his education at Amangwe High School in KwaZulu-Natal.
Before fully stepping into music, Jabu worked as a laboratory assistant at Alusaf in Richards Bay and earned a degree in education, majoring in English and communication science. He later taught and lectured while quietly nurturing his love for music.
His musical journey began in school choirs and campus ensembles, exploring jazz, African rhythms, and worship. In 1994, he co-founded the iconic Joyous Celebration choir with Lindelani Mkhize and Mthunzi Namba, creating a platform that has shaped South African gospel for decades. Around the same time, he launched his solo career.
Jabu’s Crosspower Experience series, beginning in 2009, showcases his signature blend of live worship and contemporary gospel, with family members often contributing. A recipient of several awards, including the SAMAs and Africa Gospel Music Awards, he remains a pillar of inspiration.
Now leading Cross-power Ministries in Johannesburg, Jabu remains committed to nurturing others, proving that his story isn’t just about music, it’s about purpose, people, and praise.
