Lindokuhle Mgedeza, professionally known as Mlindo the Vocalist, was born in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Growing up in a large family of 17 siblings, his career dates back to the age of four, when he sang in his church choir, cultivating a love for music. His mother, a domestic worker, played a pivotal role in shaping his values and drive. Mlindo attended school in KwaZulu-Natal and later enrolled at the University of Zululand for a Bachelor of Education degree, which he left in 2018 to pursue music full-time. His Zulu heritage and rural upbringing inform the emotional warmth and storytelling that define his voice.
Mlindo’s professional breakthrough came between 2017 and 2018. After performing locally and sharing covers online, his stripped-down rendition of DJ Maphorisa’s “Midnight Starring” captured attention. Winning the Golden Search competition in Richards Bay in 2017 opened doors to collaborations, leading to a deal with BlaqBoy Music. In early 2018, he released “AmaBlesser,” which went four times platinum and paved the way for his debut album, "Emakhaya" (2018). The album, blending Afropop, Afro-soul, house, and alternative R&B, earned platinum certification, millions of streams, and multiple SAMA nominations, with tracks like “Macala” achieving chart success.
