Journey
Kaiga Mutundu, known professionally as Chris Kaiga, is an award‑winning Kenyan rapper, producer, and songwriter whose inventive approach has redefined contemporary Afro‑Pop and urban music in East Africa. Born and raised in Nairobi’s Lang’ata district, his sound is deeply rooted in the rhythms, slang, and street culture of the city.
Kaiga describes his music as “Debe” — a genre‑blending fusion of Kenyan hip‑hop, dance, and Afrobeat that reflects his playful lyricism and theatrical visuals. His tracks often feature Sheng (local Swahili‑English slang) and creative storytelling, while his music videos are known for their distinctive, narrative‑rich aesthetic.
He began his musical journey in 2009 as a beatmaker and producer and was involved in several early groups, including Usual Suspekts, SLAP (Sounds Like A Plan), and KHM (Kwenye Hii Masaa), before launching his solo career in 2018. His breakthrough came in 2019 with the hit single Zimenice, which brought him mainstream acclaim and a wider audience.
In 2022, Chris Kaiga released his debut full‑length project, Adventures of Chris Kaiga, showcasing his range and conceptual vision. He has released a slate of popular singles, including Chain Chain, Mastingo (featuring Kahu$h), Hapo Tu (with Nyashinski), I Want, and Kameshika Signal.
Outside of performance, Kaiga is a co‑founder of Up n Up Records (Up & Up Creatives), a Nairobi‑based music studio and creative enterprise that supports rising talent. His work has earned industry recognition, including Best New Artist at the 2019 Pulse Music Video Awards (PMVA), along with multiple nominations for choreography and visual direction.
Chris Kaiga’s inventive sound, distinctive visuals, and boundary‑pushing storytelling have solidified him as a leading creative force in Kenya’s vibrant music scene.
