Born in Barcelona, Catalonia, he emerged during the 1960s as a leading figure of the Nova Cançó movement, which promoted the public use of the Catalan language during the Franco era. Working in both Catalan and Spanish, Serrat built a career defined by the fusion of poetry and popular music, shaping generations of listeners across Spain and Latin America. Many consider his landmark album "Mediterráneo" to be one of the greatest Spanish-language recordings ever.
