Arijit Singh, born in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal, India, is an Indian playback singer, composer, music producer, and live performer. Since launching his professional career in 2007, he has become one of the most accomplished artists in Indian recorded music, with a catalogue spanning film soundtracks, independent releases, and multilingual recordings. His work covers genres including filmi, Indian classical, Sufi, folk, pop, rock, ghazal, qawwali, and devotional music.
Raised in a family with a strong musical background, Singh received formal training in Indian classical vocals, tabla, and Rabindra Sangeet from the Hazari brothers. He first attracted national attention as a contestant on the television talent show 'Fame Gurukul' in 2005. After the competition, he established himself behind the scenes as a music programmer and assistant, working with composers such as Pritam, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Vishal–Shekhar, Mithoon, and Monty Sharma before transitioning into playback singing.
His first Hindi film recording was "Phir Mohabbat" from 'Murder 2' (2011), while the release of "Tum Hi Ho" from 'Aashiqui 2' (2013) marked a turning point in his career. The recording earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and led to collaborations on many successful Hindi film productions. His credits include "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani," "2 States," "CityLights," "Hamari Adhuri Kahani," "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil," "Raees," "Padmaavat," "Kalank," "Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva," "Animal," and "Laapataa Ladies." His repertoire also features recordings such as "Kabira," "Muskurane," "Gerua," "Janam Janam," "Channa Mereya," "Kesariya," "Apna Bana Le," "Sajni," and "Binte Dil."
Singh has recorded in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Assamese, Odia, and Bhojpuri. Beyond playback singing, he has contributed as a composer, arranger, programmer, and producer on selected projects. His recordings have been released through labels including T-Series, Sony Music India, Zee Music Company, Saregama, Tips, YRF Music, Eros Music, and Oriyon Music.
His honours include two National Film Awards, a record-equalling eight Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer, multiple IIFA Awards, and the Padma Shri, awarded by the Government of India in 2025. He has remained among India's most-streamed recording artists for several consecutive years and became Spotify's most-followed artist globally in 2026. Alongside his recording work, he performs extensively on international tours across Asia, Europe, North America, Australia, and the Middle East. His sustained commercial success, multilingual catalogue, and contributions to Indian film music have established him as one of the defining playback singers of his generation.
