Lutendo Kungoane, better known as DJ Sliqe, is an award-winning South African DJ, producer, and music executive who has become one of the key voices shaping contemporary hip hop in the country. Born and raised in Gauteng, he developed a love for music while still in school. By Grade 10, he was already the go-to DJ for his school’s social events, laying the foundation for a career that would later take him onto national stages. His early years behind the decks in Johannesburg’s club scene sharpened his ear for what moves a crowd and prepared him for a bigger leap into music production.
DJ Sliqe’s national breakthrough came with the release of “Do Like I Do”, a collaboration with rapper Kwesta and the late Flabba. The single quickly gained popularity, and its star-studded remix, which featured some of the biggest names in South African hip hop, elevated him into the spotlight. In 2016, he made history as the first hip hop DJ to win a South African Music Award (SAMA) when the remix was awarded Best Remix of the Year.
Since then, Sliqe has worked with a wide range of celebrated artists, including Riky Rick, Shekhinah, A-Reece, Yanga Chief, and AKA. His projects are known for bringing together diverse voices and showcasing the depth of South Africa’s rap and R&B talent.
In 2020, his influence grew beyond his own records when he was appointed Head of Hip Hop & R&B at Sony Music Entertainment South Africa. In this executive role, he scouts, signs, and develops artists, while continuing to release music of his own.
Balancing artistry and leadership, DJ Sliqe has built a career that bridges underground energy with mainstream recognition. He remains a central figure in driving South Africa’s hip hop forward, both as a creator and as a mentor to the next generation.
