Journey

Angell Mutoni, a Rwandan rapper, singer, and poet, was born in Uganda to a musically-inclined family that nurtured her early passion for the arts. Raised across Uganda, Rwanda, and Canada, her eclectic cultural experiences deeply influence her musical style, a blend of hip-hop, soul, R&B, and occasional trap. Angell began songwriting at 17 while attending school in Kigali, finding her voice through the collective Dark Matter Entertainment and stepping onto stages with conviction. Her music speaks to themes of self-love, identity, and breaking stereotypes, particularly those faced by young Rwandan women. Her lyrical integrity is paired with a bold, emotive presence that demands attention, as exemplified in projects like 'For Now' with Dr. Nganji, released in 2023. Angell's performances have graced stages at prominent festivals across East Africa, from Kigali Up to the Amani Festival, and she gained further recognition as a top 10 finalist in the 2016 RFI Découvertes contest. She showcased her talents internationally as part of the Goethe Talents program at Pop Kultur Berlin in 2022. In addition to her music, Angell is a driving force behind the Eclectic Nappy Heads Collective, a platform fostering sisterhood and collaboration among women artists. She's also a co-host of 'The Kila Kitu Podcast,' which offers authentic dialogues in the creative landscape. With a vision to elevate Rwandan music globally, Angell continues to inspire with her fearless artistry and commitment to authenticity.
