Etmet Ghideon Musa, widely known as Witch Prophet, is reshaping the Canadian music scene from her base in Toronto, underscoring her Ethiopian and Eritrean heritage through a fusion of soul, jazz, and hip-hop. Her artistic journey began with a dedication to authenticity and cultural representation, a mission that has attracted a global audience. Co-founder of Heart Lake Records Inc., she collaborates with her wife and producer, SUN SUN, to develop music that invites listeners into a deeply personal soundscape.
Her sophomore album, "D.N.A Activation" (2020), was celebrated for its homage to her roots, securing a place on the Polaris Music Prize shortlist. The accompanying visual for "Tesfay" received nominations at esteemed award platforms, highlighting her innovative approach to music videos. In 2023, the release of "Gateway Experience" further expanded her repertoire, delving into themes of consciousness and supernatural experiences, which again placed her on the Polaris long list.
Witch Prophet’s impact goes beyond her recordings. She has graced stages with artists like JPEGMAFIA and Sudan Archives and performed at major festivals such as SXSW and the Montreal Jazz Festival. The documentary "Leilani’s Fortune," chronicling her artistic journey, garnered the Audience Award at the InsideOut Film Festival.
