Slick Rick, born Richard Martin Lloyd Walters in London, England, is a British-American rapper widely regarded as one of hip-hop’s greatest storytellers. He moved to the Bronx, New York, during childhood and came of age in the formative years of hip-hop culture. A childhood injury left him blind in one eye, and his trademark eye patch later became part of his iconic public image. He first gained attention as a member of the Kangol Crew before achieving major success through his work with Doug E. Fresh on the classic 1985 single “La Di Da Di.” His debut album, “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick” (1988), established him as a defining figure of golden-age hip-hop with songs such as “Children’s Story,” “Mona Lisa,” “Teenage Love,” and “Hey Young World.” Slick Rick later released “The Ruler’s Back,” “Behind Bars,” and “The Art of Storytelling,” and his influence extended across boom bap, East Coast hip-hop, and hardcore rap traditions. More recent projects associated with his catalog include “Badman Generation,” “VICTORY,” and “Documents,” released through Mass Appeal. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with artists including Nas, Idris Elba, Giggs, OutKast, Snoop Dogg, and Jay-Z, demonstrating a rare cross-generational reach.
