Louis Mhlanga (born November 10, 1956, in Mbare, Harare, Zimbabwe) is a celebrated guitarist, singer, composer, and producer whose career began in the 1970s. Self-taught from age 10, he drew early inspiration from Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, and Zimbabwean traditional sounds, shaping a distinctive style that blends jazz, rock, pop, and Shona mbira rhythms.
Mhlanga played with several groups, including Baked Beans, Talking Drum, Ilanga, and Mudzimu, and collaborated with icons like Oliver Mtukudzi. His versatility soon made him one of southern Africa’s most sought-after guitarists. In 1999, his collaboration with Vusi Mahlasela on "Live at the Bassline" gained regional acclaim, followed by his acclaimed 2001 album "Shamwari," featuring the hit “Distant Lover,” later used as the theme for The Mai Chisamba Show.
Beyond performance, Mhlanga has produced and arranged for notable artists such as Thomas Mapfumo, King Sunny Adé, Hugh Masekela, and Vusi Mahlasela. His discography includes Mukai, Music Ye Afrika, World Traveler, and Stories. Internationally, he has taught African guitar, notably serving as musician-in-residence at the Royal Dutch Conservatory, and directed the Ethnomusicology Trust at the Zimbabwe College of Music.
Throughout his career, Mhlanga has been celebrated for his fluid guitar tone and ability to merge African rhythms with Western harmony. He was married to Margaret Indi, with whom he had children, and despite living abroad for much of his career, he continues to maintain close ties to Zimbabwe.
