Journey
Rachael Desire Luzinda, born Racheal Nancy Luzinda; August 15, in Ibanda, Uganda, rose to fame in the mid‑2000s as a singer-songwriter, TV/radio presenter, and stylistic icon. She attended Buganda Road Primary, Omega College, and Makerere High, later enrolling at Makerere University for Development Economics before leaving to pursue her music career.
Luzinda began singing in church and joined TV and radio, working with WBS TV (2004–05), Radio Samba, and Dembe FM (evening drive). Her recording debut came in 2006 with Nakowa Emikwano under Fenon Records. Her breakout hit Mubiite in 2007 earned her PAM Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Artist. She followed up with successful singles like Nyumirwa Nyo and Ekitone, solidifying her place in Uganda’s music scene.
In 2014, private photos leaked in a widely publicized scandal. She later spoke about the trauma and chose to transition to gospel music, releasing the album Transition as her final secular project. That period also inspired her “Girls and Goals” campaign to empower young women.
After relocating to California with her daughter and mother in 2019, Luzinda founded the Desire Luzinda Foundation International (DLFI) in June 2021. The NGO supports orphans, teen mothers, and vulnerable youth in Uganda by providing education, wellness, and vocational skills through its “Winds of Purpose” initiative.
Celebrated for her fashion sense, nominated Most Stylish Female Artist at the 2016 Abryanz Style Awards and her resilience, Luzinda remains a prominent figure in music and advocacy both in Uganda and abroad.
