Born Alirio Rojas Fanon on August 28, 1974, in Mexico, Ali Angel grew up in the vibrant cultural milieu of the Caribbean. His diverse heritage, with a Venezuelan father and Martiniquais mother, exposed him to a myriad of Afro-Caribbean sounds that shaped his musical journey. By the age of seven, Angel was already proficient in percussion, a skill set that would later expand to include piano, guitar, and bass. These early experiences fostered a deep connection with musical genres such as Zouk, kompa, calypso, and reggae. In 1991, he co-founded the band Théorem’ in Fort-de-France, which quickly rose to prominence with their dynamic performances across France and the French Antilles.
Ali Angel's talent as a songwriter was highlighted when he received a SACEM award for the track "Lombraj an Pyé Mango," interpreted by Chris Combette and Kassav's Jocelyne Béroard. With the creation of his own record label and studio in 1998, he laid the groundwork for a solo career that began with the critically acclaimed album "Ali at Home" in 1999. This album not only demonstrated his unique production skills but also marked his evolution into a key player in the Zouk scene. His subsequent albums, "Angel", "Hit Me...", and "Hit Me Again" showcased a masterful blending of soulful melodies with electronic textures, solidifying his influence in genres like kizomba and afrohouse. Across Europe, Africa, the Antilles, and North America, Ali Angel continues to be celebrated for his contributions, nurturing talents like Lynnsha and Perle Lama, and reinforcing the global appeal of Afro-Caribbean music.
