Journey

Absolute Tonny, whose birth name is Tony Musaazi, stands as a significant figure in Uganda's music landscape. Born on August 18, 1994, in Kampala, his passion for jazz played a profound role in shaping his career path. From an early age, he participated in his school’s brass band, a stepping stone that led him to the trumpet at just 11 years old. His formal education culminated in a BA in Economics from Kyambogo University, but his heart remained tied to music. Tonny’s debut album, 'Oli Wange', released in 2017, marked the beginning of his exploration of 'fusion jazz', an engaging blend of Ugandan soul, swing, and funk, all deeply rooted in traditional rhythms such as bakisimba. His compelling sound caught attention both locally and internationally, highlighted by works like 'Entuuko'. The COVID-19 lockdown became a productive time for Tonny, who crafted the 'Tindiga (Town Trek)' EP. Continuing to push creative boundaries, he followed up with the release of 'Do Me Good' in 2022, further establishing his place on global jazz stages, including performances at festivals such as Jazz Safari, Kigali Jazz Junction, and Sauti za Busara. Beyond performing, Tonny is committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians as a teacher at C&S Music School in Bugolobi. He also leads cultural initiatives that link music with storytelling and heritage preservation. In 2023, he released 'Smooth Affection', an instrumental piece reflecting his dedication to expressing emotion and maintaining his cultural roots in music. Tonny’s ongoing journey in jazz portrays an artist deeply connected to his roots while remaining dynamically engaged with the contemporary music scene.
