As El-P said on the Killer Mike song, "Walking in the Snow." "You helped to fuel the death machine that down the line will kill you too" And he's not talking about some hidden conspiracy. He's naming something we can verify with our own eyes.
Every institution Black people walk into was designed before we got there. The rules were already written. The people in charge were already chosen. And the endpoint of that design, if we don't interrupt it, is that we get used and then we get discarded.
Here's the part we keep missing. We confuse presence with power. We vote, so we think we have political power. We work, so we think we have economic power. We consume, so we think we have market power. We create the culture, so we think we have cultural power.
But participation is not power. Power is control.
The question was never whether we'd be in the room. The question is what we can do once we're in the room, and whether anyone has to answer to us.
The solution to our problem has always been the same. Organization.
