Send us Fan Mail dead prez opens this episode with a line about being imprisoned without necessarily being locked behind bars, and that idea ended up providing the structure for almost everything we're talking about this week because confinement, at its most sophisticated, is not always physical. Sometimes it is a system you depend upon but do not control, sometimes it is a technology that knows more about your movements than you realize, sometimes it is a political structure designed in such a way that you can participate without ever really possessing power, and sometimes the prison exists in the assumptions you've absorbed about yourself so thoroughly that you no longer recognize somebody else put them there. We usually think about prison as architecture: concrete, steel, a locked door and somebody standing outside with the key. That's real, and nothing I'm saying minimizes it, but bars are the crude version of confinement because they require constant physical control. The more sophisticated form of power doesn't necessarily need a building. It needs systems, incentives, information and dependency, because once those things are in place, people can remain constrained while believing they are completely free. That is really what this episode is about: the difference between recognizing the system around you and possessing enough capacity to change your relationship to it. So the question this week is not simply whether we know what is happening to us. The question is what we're building that gives us the capacity to do something about it.
