Hirdesh Singh, better known to the world as Yo Yo Honey Singh, is the Delhi-born hitmaker who essentially redrew the map for mainstream Indian music. Born on March 15, 1983, he initially built his chops behind the scenes as a beatmaker and songwriter in the Punjabi scene. By the time he broke into Bollywood with the soundtrack for "Shakal Pe Mat Ja" in 2011, Singh was already setting the stage to propel Punjabi-infused urban hip-hop directly into the heart of commercial Hindi cinema. Singh established his independent identity with "International Villager," released in 2011. The album produced major songs including “Brown Rang” and “Angreji Beat,” with the latter gaining wider exposure after its inclusion in the Hindi film "Cocktail." His growing popularity led to prominent Bollywood collaborations, including “Lungi Dance” for "Chennai Express," “Party All Night” for "Boss," and songs featured in films such as "Yaariyan," "Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety," and "Baazaar." His 2014 album "Desi Kalakaar" further established his commercial reach through tracks such as “Desi Kalakaar,” “Love Dose,” and “One Thousand Miles.” The project became an important part of his catalogue before a prolonged withdrawal from public activity. Singh later explained that serious health difficulties had affected his career and personal life. He returned to the public eye through music including “Makhna” and subsequent Bollywood releases such as “Dil Chori,” “Chhote Chhote Peg” and “Billionaire.” Singh has received multiple honours during his career, including PTC Punjabi awards for music direction and film work, BritAsia TV Music Awards recognition, UK Asian Music Awards recognition, an MTV VMAI award and an MTV Europe Music Award for Best India Act. His later catalogue includes "Honey 3.0" and "GLORY," the latter released in 2024 with 18 tracks and material incorporating Hindi, Punjabi, English and several other languages. In 2025, Singh continued his renewed international activity while revisiting “One Thousand Miles,” a track originally released on "Desi Kalakaar." By 2026, Yo Yo Honey Singh remained active as a recording artist and performer, continuing to release music and develop new projects. His career spans Punjabi music, Hindi cinema, rap, songwriting, production, and international performance, placing him among the prominent artists associated with the expansion of Indian commercial hip-hop into a wider popular-music audience.
