Born in Baisi village in Bihar’s Supaul district, Udit Narayan Jha grew up in a Maithil Brahmin family where regional music was an important part of everyday life. His earliest performances were in Nepali, Maithili, and Bhojpuri, and he spent his formative professional years singing for Radio Nepal before moving to Mumbai to pursue a career in playback singing.
Once established in the film industry, Udit Narayan became one of the most recognizable male voices in Indian cinema. He recorded extensively for labels such as Saregama and Jhankar Music and sang in Hindi, Nepali, and many other languages. Over the years, he worked with leading artists including Lata Mangeshkar, Alka Yagnik, Mohammed Rafi, Sushma Shrestha, and Deepa Jha.
Major national recognition has marked his career. He received four National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for songs featured in films such as “Lagaan,” “Dil Chahta Hai,” “Chhote Chhote Sapne Zindagi Khoobsoorat Hai,” and “Swades.” He also earned Filmfare Awards for “Chand Chhupa Badal Mein” from “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” and “Mitwa” from “Lagaan.” Nepal honored him with the Order of Gorkha Dakshina Bahu, while the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.
In addition to singing, he entered film production and produced the Bhojpuri film “Kab Hoi Gawna Hamar,” which received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bhojpuri in 2005. Through decades of work in playback singing, regional music, and cinema, Udit Narayan has become one of the enduring voices of South Asian popular music.
