Journey
Tony Williams Ssenkebejje, born on December 7, 1944, in Jinja, Uganda, left a lasting legacy as a rhythm guitarist, bandleader, and pioneering composer. His musical journey began at Lubiri Secondary School, where he honed his guitar skills and co-founded The Cranes Band in 1965. Tony's exceptional musicianship transcended Uganda's borders when he moved to Kenya, joining notable groups such as Les Noir, The Spartans, and Mombasa Vikings, enriching the regional sonic landscape with a blend of soukous, juju, and jazz elements. His marriage to Rachael Ssenkebejje in 1974 added a dynamic vocal component to his performances, as she sang with Simba Six.
Returning to Uganda in the early 1990s, Tony joined the legendary Afrigo Band, contributing significantly to their enduring success. In 1993, he and Rachael formed Simba Ngoma alongside Sam Mulungi and Florence Asiimwe, evolving into Simba Sounds by 1994. Simba Sounds captivated audiences at Kampala's Serena Hotel and beyond, including tours to London and Djibouti. Their discography features "Byonna Mbimanyi" (1996), "Topapa" (2002), and two 2009 albums, "Wulira Ate Yiga" and "Going Strong." Tony's career spanned six decades, concluding in 2025, yet his influence on Ugandan music remains profound and inspirational.
