Omawumi Boma Megbele-Yussuf is a prominent voice in Nigerian music, known for her adept integration of genres like bongoflava, alte, and afrobeats. Born on April 13, 1982, in Delta State, she embraces her Itsekiri heritage to enrich her sound. Gaining initial fame as the runner-up on Idols West Africa in 2007, her career has been characterized by an authentic blend of strong, vibrant vocals and a unique fusion of soul, R&B, jazz, and Afropop. An alumnus of Ambrose Alli University, she briefly practiced law, before resolving to focus entirely on her musical path.
Her discography underscores notable works such as "In The Music," a debut that catapulted her into the spotlight, followed by critically acclaimed albums like "Wonder Woman," "Lasso of Truth," "Timeless," "In Her Feelings," and "Love Deep High Life." Beyond the microphone, Omawumi has made significant strides in Nollywood, with key roles in films like "Inale," "The Return of Jenifa," and "House of Gold." In collaboration with singer Waje, she co-produced "She Is," diversifying her artistic repertoire. Her influence extends to the judging panel of Nigerian Idol, and she leverages her public appeal as an ambassador for brands like Globacom, Konga, and Malta Guinness.
