Maria Bethânia Viana Teles Veloso is a Brazilian singer whose six-decade career has made her one of the defining voices of MPB and Brazilian popular music. Born on June 18, 1946, in Santo Amaro, Bahia, she developed an interest in the arts from childhood and became involved in Salvador’s cultural scene before moving to Rio de Janeiro. In 1965, she gained national attention after replacing Nara Leão in the landmark stage production “Opinião,” where her interpretation of “Carcará” established her as a powerful new voice.
Her self-titled debut album arrived in 1965, beginning a recording career that has produced more than 60 albums. Throughout the following decades, Bethânia built a distinctive repertoire combining MPB, samba, regional Brazilian traditions, poetry, and theatrical performance. Her albums include “Drama,” “Pássaro da Manhã,” “Álibi,” “Mel,” “Brasileirinho,” and “Mangueira - A Menina dos Meus Olhos.”
“Álibi,” released in 1978, became a major commercial milestone. It made Bethânia the first Brazilian female singer to sell one million copies of a recording, while also making her the highest-selling Brazilian singer of the 1970s. Her work during this period also included collaborations with major figures such as Chico Buarque, Edu Lobo, and her brother Caetano Veloso.
In 1976, she joined Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Gal Costa for “Doces Bárbaros,” an influential MPB supergroup whose album remains one of the notable commercial successes in Brazilian music. Bethânia later expanded her international connections through projects such as her 2008 collaboration with Cuban singer Omara Portuondo.
Her career continued to produce significant projects. “Brasileirinho,” released in 2003, explored a broad range of Brazilian musical traditions, while “Mangueira - A Menina dos Meus Olhos” celebrated the Rio de Janeiro samba school Mangueira in 2019. In 2024, Bethânia also joined Caetano Veloso for a major concert tour, bringing their sibling partnership to audiences across Brazil.
Her international recognition reached a new milestone in 2026 when “Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo,” recorded with Caetano Veloso, won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album. The victory marked Bethânia’s first Grammy win.
Bethânia has remained active into 2026, with “Vera Cruz” released in January and “Encontros” issued in June.
Across more than six decades, Maria Bethânia has maintained a distinctive artistic identity rooted in Brazilian music, literature, poetry, and performance.
