Journey
Senzo Brikka Vilakazi, better known as Kwesta, was born on 11 August 1988 in Katlehong, a township in South Africa’s Gauteng province. Growing up in an environment rich with music and culture, he was drawn to rap as a teenager, experimenting with rhymes and performing for friends long before stepping into the studio. That passion would grow into one of South Africa’s most respected hip-hop careers.
Kwesta’s first studio album, Special Rekwest (2010), introduced him as a new voice willing to tell raw and personal stories. His style, marked by a deep voice and unhurried flow, made him stand out from the beginning. Three years later, he released DaKAR (Da King of Afrikan Rap), an ambitious double-disc project performed in both English and isiZulu. It reflected both his versatility and his pride in South African identity.
The turning point came with DaKAR II in 2016. Featuring hits like “Ngud” and “Ngiyaz’fela Ngawe,” the album became one of the defining projects of the decade in South African music. It dominated the charts, won multiple awards, and confirmed Kwesta as not just a rapper but a cultural figure.
Known for staying authentic, Kwesta has collaborated with local icons and international names, while never losing the township perspective that shaped him. His music speaks about love, resilience, celebration, and the daily realities of life in South Africa, making him relatable to both grassroots audiences and global hip-hop fans.
Today, Kwesta is more than a performer he is a storyteller carrying Katlehong’s voice into the mainstream. With over a decade of impact behind him, he continues to evolve, balancing commercial success with the authenticity that first won him respect.
