Haitian rapper, singer, songwriter, and composer Baptista Lugendy St-Hubert, better known as Baky Popilè or simply Baky, was born in Les Cayes, Haiti. Raised as the youngest of four brothers in a musical family, he developed an early interest in music, first experimenting with singing and guitar before discovering his stronger connection to rap. He attended Frères Jérôme in Les Cayes and later studied civil engineering at Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago in the Dominican Republic, but eventually left his studies to pursue music.
Baky began his professional career in 2012 with “Paske'm se Ayisyen,” a song inspired by concerns surrounding the treatment of Haitians in the Dominican Republic. The track gradually attracted public attention,, and a remix featuring several Haitian rappers helped increase his visibility. His growing popularity earned him the name Baky Popilè and established him as a promising voice in Rap Kreyòl. He subsequently joined RKM Recordz and released his debut album, “Fòs Yon Black,” in 2014.
His later catalogue includes “Echec Et Mat” (2018), “Le Making of Un Star” (2019), “Eskize Mwen” (2021), and the 2022 projects “Rap ap rete Rap” and “Chante ap ret Chante.” These releases expanded his subject matter beyond social issues, incorporating love, heartbreak, ambition, regret, and personal experiences. His songwriting can also become deeply introspective, as demonstrated by “Dènye Lèt (Depresyon),” in which he discusses personal struggles and the pressures associated with his career.
Baky's music remains rooted in Haitian Creole and Rap Kreyòl, while occasionally incorporating Caribbean and African influences. His 2025 album “KAIA” continued this creative progression, including songs such as “Legend,” “Invincible,” “24/7,” and “Love Pa Peye Bill.” Known for direct storytelling and reflections on Haitian life, Baky has become one of the recognizable figures of his generation's Haitian rap movement.
