Journey
Dele Sosimi, celebrated Afrobeat musician, was born as Bamidele Olatunbosun Sosimi on February 22, 1963, in Hackney, London. Immersed in the polyrhythmic textures of Afrobeat, Sosimi first made his mark as a keyboardist with Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 from 1979 to 1986. He further enriched the genre by co-founding the Positive Force with Femi Kuti, serving not only as a keyboard player but also as a musical director, orchestrating their powerful sound from 1986 to 1994. Sosimi’s debut album, 'Turbulent Times' (2002), propelled him onto the international scene, marrying traditional Nigerian beats with jazz and funk influences. His expert touch can be heard on works of both Fela and Femi Kuti as well as collaborations with Tony Allen. An influential educator, Sosimi established the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Foundation and teaches Afrobeat as a visiting lecturer at London Metropolitan University. His musical prowess isn't limited to live performances but extends to his work on the London stage production, 'Fela!', as Afrobeat consultant. Sosimi, residing in London, continues to lead his dynamic Afrobeat collective, captivating audiences worldwide with intricate compositions that honor the genre's pioneering legacy and continuing evolution.
