In the early 1980s, Zimbabwe's newly independent government under Robert Mugabe unleashed a brutal campaign of violence against civilians in Matabeleland, known as Gukurahundi. The North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade killed an estimated 20,000 Ndebele people, tortured countless others, and destroyed villages. This episode explores how the legacy of the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA) and the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) rivalry spilled into post-independence repression, the role of Joshua Nkomo, the Entumbane clashes, and the long silence surrounding these atrocities. We discuss the 1987 Unity Accord, the failure to prosecute perpetrators, and how Zimbabwe's genocide denial mirrors other post-colonial amnesias. Through firsthand accounts, we trace the roots of Gukurahundi in the liberation struggle and its echoes in Zimbabwe's later crises under Mugabe and Mnangagwa. #Gukurahundi #Zimbabwe #RobertMugabe #JoshuaNkomo #Matabeleland #FifthBrigade #ZANLA #ZIPRA #Entumbane #UnityAccord #1980s #Massacres #Ndebele #AfricanHistory #PostColonial #Genocide #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
