When the Boer War broke out in October 1899, the British Empire expected a quick victory. Instead, they found themselves besieged in a dusty railway town on the edge of the Kalahari. This episode of The Story of South Africa goes inside the 217-day Siege of Mafeking, where Colonel Robert Baden-Powell—future founder of the Boy Scouts—turned a strategic backwater into a global propaganda tool. We look at how Baden-Powell stretched rations, faked landmines, and used a homemade cannon to fool the Boers under General Piet Cronjé. But behind the legend, the siege was brutal: Mafeking's black population, who made up over two thirds of the town's people, were pushed to the brink of starvation, forced into a separate camp, and died in their hundreds while the British garrison held on. Through diaries, telegrams, and the controversial role of the Barolong people under Chief Wessels Montshiwa, we untangle the real story from the Baden-Powell myth. The relief of Mafeking sparked ecstatic celebrations across Britain, but the siege itself revealed the racial fault lines that would define South Africa long after the war ended. #SiegeOfMafeking #BadenPowell #BoerWar #SouthAfrica #Mafeking #PietCronj #Barolong #WesselsMontshiwa #BritishEmpire #SecondBoerWar #Scouting #SiegeWarfare #MilitaryHistory #RacialHistory #Kitchener #CapeColony #History #FexingoHistory #Apartheid #NelsonMandela Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
