Show notes

In 1947, as South Africa stood at a crossroads between segregation and the draconian system soon to be known as apartheid, a government-appointed commission delivered a surprising verdict: permanent African urbanisation was inevitable, and policy should adapt accordingly. The Fagan Commission, led by Judge Henry Fagan, recommended easing pass laws and acknowledging a settled African urban workforce. But a rival report—the Sauer Report—argued the opposite: total segregation. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the forgotten moment when apartheid might have gone differently. They follow the commission's findings, the political firestorm in the run-up to the 1948 election, and how the National Party used the Sauer Report to win power and entrench racial separation for decades. Along the way, they touch on the Stallard doctrine, the 1936 Natives Trust and Land Act, and the quiet dissenting voices that were drowned out by history. This is the story of a policy fork—and the road not taken. #FaganCommission #HenryFagan #SauerReport #ApartheidOrigins #SouthAfricanHistory #Segregation #1948Election #NationalParty #StallardDoctrine #NativesTrustAndLandAct #AfricanUrbanisation #PassLaws #JanSmuts #UnitedParty #DFMalan #20thCentury #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
