In March 1922, the streets of Johannesburg erupted in gunfire as thousands of white miners, armed and organized, fought a three-day battle against the South African state. This episode of The Story of South Africa examines the Rand Rebellion — the climax of a bitter struggle between white labour and the mining magnates led by Ernest Oppenheimer and the Chamber of Mines. We unpack the fusion of class anger and racial anxiety that drove the strikers, the role of the Communist Party of South Africa and its leader Bill Andrews, the government's declaration of martial law under Prime Minister Jan Smuts, and the bloodshed that left over 150 dead. We also explore the aftermath: the hangings of the rebel leaders, the crushing of white union power, and the long shadow the rebellion cast on South African politics — including the rise of a more militant Afrikaner nationalism. Specific sites like the Jeppe Street Mine, Fordsburg, and the Brixton Ridge feature, alongside key figures like striker-turned-martyr Taffy Long and the left-wing councillor H. W. Sampson. This is the story of a moment when white South Africa turned on itself, and the consequences that shaped the century to come. #RandRebellion #Witwatersrand #JanSmuts #WhiteLabour #CommunistPartySA #BillAndrews #TaffyLong #Fordsburg #Johannesburg #MiningHistory #SouthAfrica #1922 #ClassStruggle #ApartheidOrigins #AfrikanerNationalism #MartialLaw #ErnestOppenheimer #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
