When World War I broke out in 1914, South Africa—a British dominion—was expected to fight against Germany. But many Afrikaners, still nursing wounds from the Anglo-Boer War, saw an opportunity to reclaim their republics. The 1914 Boer Rebellion, or Maritz Rebellion, saw former Boer generals like Christiaan de Wet, Manie Maritz, and C.F. Beyers take up arms against their own government. This episode explores the tangled loyalties of the rebellion: the role of the South African Native National Congress (later ANC) in supporting the government, the brutal suppression at Mushroom Valley, and the legacy of bitterness that fueled later Afrikaner nationalism. We discuss the failed attempt to restore the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, the execution of Jopie Fourie, and how the rebellion ultimately strengthened Prime Minister Louis Botha's hand. From the dusty plains of the Orange Free State to the mountains of German South West Africa, this is a story of betrayal, idealism, and the violent birth of a nation. #BoerRebellion #MaritzRebellion #ChristiaanDeWet #ManieMaritz #JopieFourie #LouisBotha #WorldWarI #SouthAfrica #AngloBoerWar #AfrikanerNationalism #GermanSouthWestAfrica #MushroomValley #ZuidAfrikaanscheRepubliek #UnionOfSouthAfrica #1914 #History #FexingoHistory #ApartheidOrigins Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
