Show notes

On March 21, 1960, a crowd of peaceful protesters gathered outside the Sharpeville police station to demonstrate against the infamous pass laws. What happened next changed the course of South African history. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the Sharpeville massacre, in which 69 protesters were killed and hundreds wounded, and its aftermath. They discuss the role of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) under Robert Sobukwe, the government's brutal response, and the subsequent banning of both the PAC and the African National Congress (ANC). The turn to armed struggle is examined, including the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation), Nelson Mandela's sabotage campaign, and the arrests that led to the Rivonia Trial. The episode also delves into the international reaction, the declaration of a state of emergency, and the long shadow Sharpeville cast over the anti-apartheid movement. #Sharpeville #PassLaws #PanAfricanistCongress #RobertSobukwe #AfricanNationalCongress #UmkhontoWeSizwe #NelsonMandela #RivoniaTrial #ArmedStruggle #Apartheid #SouthAfrica #1960 #SharpevilleMassacre #DefianceCampaign #FexingoHistory #History #20thCentury #CivilRights #ZuluKingdom #ShakaZulu Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
