In early 1912, a group of African intellectuals, chiefs, and activists gathered in Bloemfontein to form a political organization that would become the African National Congress — the oldest liberation movement in Africa. This episode tells the story of that founding: the vision of Pixley ka Isaka Seme, a Columbia- and Oxford-educated lawyer who called for unity after the 1910 Union of South Africa. We meet the founding president John Dube, the secretary Sol Plaatje, and other key delegates like Thomas Mapikela and Walter Rubusana. We explore the challenges of forging a national movement across ethnic and regional divisions, the goals of the South African Native National Congress, and how this newborn organization quickly faced its first major crisis: the devastating Natives Land Act of 1913. This is the origin moment of a century-long struggle for equality and justice in South Africa. #ANC #PixleySeme #JohnDube #SolPlaatje #Bloemfontein1912 #SouthAfricanNativeNationalCongress #SouthAfricaHistory #UnionOfSouthAfrica #NativesLandAct #AfricanNationalCongress #Resistance #ColonialHistory #Founding #AfricanLiberation #ThomasMapikela #WalterRubusana #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
