In December 1956, South African police raided homes and offices across the country, arresting 156 people – activists, lawyers, teachers, and leaders of the African National Congress, the South African Indian Congress, the Congress of Democrats, and the Coloured People's Congress. They were charged with high treason and conspiracy to overthrow the state by violence. The Treason Trial would drag on for nearly five years, become the longest trial in South African history, and ultimately end in acquittal. But along the way, it became a stage for resistance, a showcase of the anti-apartheid movement's diversity and resolve. This episode follows the arc of the trial: the arrests, the underground organizing, the legendary figure of Nelson Mandela as a defendant and lawyer, the crucial role of the women who sustained the accused, and the unexpected verdict that exposed the state's weakness. We meet the legal team – led by Bram Fischer and including H.C. Nicholas – and the key state witness, a historian whose testimony backfired spectacularly. We also uncover the little-known story of how the accused, held in a Johannesburg prison, organized study groups and turned their confinement into a political education.
