Show notes

In 1901, British forces in South Africa adopted a scorched-earth policy, destroying Boer farms and herding families into concentration camps. Conditions were appalling: overcrowding, inadequate food, disease. Emily Hobhouse, a British welfare activist, visited the camps and documented the suffering, shocking the British public. The camps for black Africans were even deadlier. This episode explores the humanitarian disaster, the cover-up, the Fawcett Commission, and how the trauma shaped Afrikaner nationalism and the later apartheid system. #BoerWar #ConcentrationCamps #EmilyHobhouse #SouthAfrica #BritishEmpire #WarCrimes #Humanitarian #Afrikaner #History #FexingoHistory #SecondBoerWar #ScorchedEarth #FawcettCommission #Vereeniging #OrangeFreeState #Transvaal #BlackCamps #Imperialism Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
