In the early hours of February 21, 1917, the troopship SS Mendi collided with another vessel in the English Channel and sank within 25 minutes. Over 600 Black South African soldiers of the South African Native Labour Corps drowned — most of them men who had volunteered to serve the British Empire in World War I, despite being denied the right to carry arms under South African law. This episode tells the story of the Mendi disaster: the chaos of the collision, the men who huddled on the deck as the ship listed, the chaplain Reverend Isaac Wauchope Dyobha who reportedly led a death-dance and called out to his comrades to be quiet and die like warriors, and the aftermath in which the South African government suppressed news of what had happened. We trace the men's origins — from rural homesteads in the Eastern Cape and Basutoland to training at Cape Town's Rosebank camp — and follow the political fallout, including the 1919 sinking of the SS Zulu and the rise of African war-veterans' organizations that fed into the early ANC.
