We trace the dramatic rise and violent end of Mansa Sakura, the former Wangara merchant who seized the Malian throne through a daring coup against his predecessor. While previous episodes covered the golden age of Mansa Musa, this conversation explores the political fractures that followed, focusing on Sakura’s brief but transformative reign in the early fourteenth century. We examine how he attempted to curb the power of the old Keita aristocracy by promoting meritocracy and redistributing wealth from the gold fields, policies that alienated the traditional elite. The narrative culminates in the Battle of Kirina II, where Sakura was defeated by the loyalist forces led by Suleyman, restarting the cycle of civil war that would slowly erode Mali’s central authority. Through the accounts of Ibn Khaldun and the Tarikh al-Sudan, we reconstruct the chaos of Niani during this period and ask whether Sakura’s modernizing impulses were too ambitious for their time or if they exposed deeper structural weaknesses in the empire’s governance. #MaliEmpire #MansaSakura #WestAfricanHistory #KeitaDynasty #WangaraMerchants #Niani #TarikhAlSudan #IbnKhaldun #14thCenturyAfrica #MalianCivilWar #BattleOfKirina #MandeCulture #AfricanEmperors #GoldTradeHistory #IslamicScholarsAfrica #FexingoHistory #HistoryPodcast #MedievalAfrica Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
