In this episode, we explore the extraordinary life of Mansa Sakura, the ninth ruler of the Mali Empire and one of history’s most unlikely monarchs. Unlike his predecessor Mansa Musa or his successor Mansa Suleyman, Sakura was not born into the Keita royal lineage. Instead, he began his life as a slave, possibly a riverboat captain or a Wangara trader who lost his freedom during a raid. Through sheer ability and loyalty to the state, he rose through the ranks of the Jama'in bureaucracy until Mansa Musa appointed him as governor of Gao. When Musa departed for his famous hajj in 1324, he left Sakura in charge of the empire. Upon Musa’s return, rather than seizing power, Sakura voluntarily stepped down, returning the throne to the Keita dynasty. This act of humility preserved the stability of Mali and highlights the meritocratic elements within the Mande legal tradition.
