Mansa Musa returned from his 1324 hajj with a retinue of scholars, poets, and architects who transformed the Mali Empire. This episode focuses on the most famous of them, the Andalusian poet-architect Abu Ishaq al-Sahili, who designed the Djinguereber Mosque in Timbuktu and introduced baked brick construction to the Sahel. But al-Sahili was not alone: local Mande builders adapted his methods, creating a distinctive Sudano-Sahelian style that still stands today. We explore the controversy around al-Sahili's actual role — was he really an architect, or more of an artistic director? We also discuss the vast building program of Mansa Musa, including the reconstruction of the Great Mosque of Djenne, the royal palace at Niani, and the urban planning of Timbuktu.
