In 1236, the Mande people gathered at Kangaba to witness something unprecedented: a single oral charter that would unify a dozen fractious kingdoms into the Mali Empire. The Kouroukan Fouga, proclaimed by Sundiata Keita after his victory at Kirina, is one of the most remarkable constitutional documents in world history — yet it has no written original.
