The Black Water Papers, Part One: The Notebook from Ennerdale A battered green notebook arrives from a house clearance in west Cumbria. Inside is the name Oliver Hargreaves, a series of entries dating from eighteen ninety-six to nineteen hundred and four, and years of obsessive research into something supposedly living beneath Ennerdale Water. When Rowan begins checking the notebook, the geography and historical details fit. The creature does not. There is no established legend matching Oliver’s investigation. No recognised account of the three black ridges he repeatedly drew. Nothing that explains how such a detailed body of work could have disappeared completely. Then Oliver stops recording where the creature appears and starts recording where he was standing when it found him. This is Part One of an original fictional folklore investigation rooted in the real landscape and history of Ennerdale.
