In this very special episode of A Shot of Soca, we sit down with Allyson Williams MBE and her daughter, Symone Williams, to reflect on six decades of one of the world’s most iconic Caribbean carnivals.
Allyson’s late husband, Vernon “Fellows” Williams, was one of the founding pioneers of Notting Hill Carnival, while Symone has grown up immersed in Carnival and continues to be part of its story today.
We speak about the history and origins of Notting Hill Carnival, how it has evolved over the last 60 years, the direction it is heading in and the importance of protecting its legacy for future generations.
This is more than a conversation about Carnival. It is about community, culture, history and the people who helped build an institution that has become such an important part of Black British and Caribbean culture.
