Karama Bakari Jongo, popularly known as Luten Karama, is a hip-hop musician hailing from Temeke, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. His journey in music began in 1995, while he was still in fifth grade, rapping on the streets and at school. By 1996, he had begun collaborating with Inspector Haruni and Dogo Side under the name Mauzauza, eventually forming the influential group Gangwe Mobb. His first encounter with Inspector Haruni happened during a visit to Gongo la Mboto, where his aunt lived. During the holidays, he attended a local disco where artists like Mketo, Haji Sinato, and Inspector Haruni performed. With his brother’s support, Luten Karama got on stage and performed 2Pac’s “Dear Mama,” catching Inspector Haruni’s attention and setting the stage for their collaboration.
Operating primarily in hip-hop and Bongo Flava (a Tanzanian genre that blends hip-hop, local rhythms, taarab, and R&B influences) Luten Karama has contributed to numerous tracks, including “Huwezi Jua” with Juma Nature and Chege on the "Ubin-adam Kazi" album, as well as songs with Inspector Haruni like "Rap Katuni," "Mkubwa Tai," "Data na Sisi," and "Alhaji Mvua." His solo releases, such as "Sina (Acoustic Version)," "Ndani ya Ndoa," and "Ni Balaa (Radio Edit)," further cement his presence in the scene. His collaborations with prominent regional artists highlight a respected, enduring role in East African music. As of 2025, Luten Karama continues to release music and remain active in the Tanzanian hip-hop community.
