Journey
Thandeka Nontobeko Ngema, known professionally as MaWhoo, is a South African singer-songwriter and model who has become a leading figure in the Amapiano and Afro-pop genres. Born in 1994 in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, she discovered her passion for music at the age of 11. Her early ambition was met with a setback when a local radio station refused to play her music, citing her young age.
This experience led her to pursue modeling while she worked on her musical craft. She eventually modeled for prestigious brands such as Tribe Afrique, House of Supreme, and Convoy Clothing South Africa. Academically, she attended the University of South Africa (UNISA) and briefly explored a career in teaching before fully committing to the entertainment industry.
MaWhoo's musical breakthrough came in 2019 with the hit single "Umshado," a collaboration with Heavy-K that garnered over a million views on YouTube and established her as a soulful new voice. Her stage name, "MaWhoo," which means "magical" in Japanese, was gifted to her by artist Okmalumkoolkat.
Since her debut, she has become a prolific collaborator, working with Amapiano giants like DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small, and Master KG. Her discography features successful projects including What A Time To Be Alive (2022), The Chosen (2023), and Amazwi Okubonga (2025).
Beyond entertainment, MaWhoo uses her platform for social advocacy, particularly focusing on raising awareness about gender-based violence (GBV). Her journey from a rejected 11-year-old aspiring singer to the first African female artist nominated for a BET Viewer’s Choice Award makes her a symbol of resilience and cultural pride in the South African music scene.
